the brave (click on this for some good ol’ history)

i was at my grandparents house today, im always there every weekend to visit my family. I’ve never been close to my grandfather but im always curious about him. Hes never been that approachable to anyone, so its just the occasional “Hi , have you eaten”  kind of conversation that goes on between me and him. Hes just there at home, gardening or rearraging things around the house..But I do know that he was in the army back then. I knew about all that at a young age when my parents told me and it didnt interest me at one bit.I was probably around 6 or 7 years old.  But now its a whole different thing, I know that he served in the United Nations, he was the batch of royal armies that went on a peacekeeping mission in Congo. Even that, I knew from my mother. I never asked him. I only vaguely remember that I had once saw a group photo of a battalion group hanging on the wall somewhere in the hall, now its not there anymore. He also has these deer or antelope antlers hanging on the wall (which im trying to figure how to convince him to give it to me) which I presume is from South Africa , again parents told me he went there. I’d love to just talk to him one day about what its like to protect a country or be at a gun point if that ever happened , I wonder what it felt like in those years during the Tunku Abdul Rahman era. Aside from my own old man, hes a hero too. I dont know who’s life he saved but it does make me see people who serve their own countries and other’s as plain and simple amazing.

Oh and i’ve tried to find any news source (news paper, online archives) regarding the 1960-1963 peacekeeping event in Africa, but not much came out, just brief statements that we’ve been there and done that , nothing detailed like records or names. It would be really interesting to read something from this historical event.

and on another note, i do think history is important, we should not forget about our roots and how some people struggled to protect what was dear. but still, texts books and lazy ‘sejarah’ lectures are never enough to know what really went on. never enough to fully realize how lucky we are in some aspects.
